Robinson Crusoe and His Farther Adventures BBC R4
By Daniel Defoe, dramatised by Andy Barrett. From The Radio Times Even in 1719, publishers and writers knew all about cashing in on a hit: Daniel Defoe quickly gave his Robinson Crusoe a sequel. Yet where the original has been reread, retold and ripped off endlessly, the sequel hasn't and this is a rare radio production of both. Tim Mclnnerny stars as Crusoe and we join him in a spot of bother in Siberia. But as the dangerous night draws in and someone must keep everyone's spirits up, Crusoe recounts his adventures to his companions. So, replace desert island with Siberia, replace the isolation with group hugs: things do appear to be very different for our man Crusoe. But the eejit is missing his island. Andy Barrett melds the two books together to bring the familiar slap up against the unfamiliar, and to breathe new life into an old tale. -- William Gallagher 19-10-2008 1/2. Robinson Crusoe in Siberia, travelling home after a second lengthy absence. Crusoe and his companions are barricaded in the Siberian woods, and under attack from the Tartars, who are closing in as the night progresses. To allay his companions' fears as they huddle round their crackling campfire, Crusoe recounts stories of his many adventures, and life on his beloved island.
