Plot: Three new students at a super-strict girl's school must face off with a repressive school administration, the sadistic, murderous student discipline brigade and corrupt politicians over the murder/suicide of one of their friends. They're approached by a blackmailer (Tsunehiko Watase) who promises to help them exact vengeance in exchange for setting up a corrupt local politician, and aided by a independent Yakuza biker chick (Reiko Ike).

Miki Sugimoto is a rebelious teenager, newly enrolled at the 'School of Hope' run by a band of dirty old men and their 'Disciplinary Committee' - the hardest of the hard girls, keen on torture and power. Here begins a tale set almost entirely in the school grounds, one of the usual heady mix of sex and violence. Great fun, strangely guilty pleasure it may be. A solid and well told narrative it is, and it makes for a different example of the genre. blending many different approaches into one extreme movie.

This is the first of the series of reviews for Panik House' 'The Pinky Violence Collection' which appears in America on DVD on November 15th 2005. Hopefully I will be able to do the rest over the coming week, so look out for three more like this soon. For now I hope this early look helps to create an impression of what to expect if you're planning to get this set, or that it persuades you to consider it if you haven't already done so.

The Story :

Eyeballs popping out. No, not on screen. My precious little deep-blues. The familiar Toei logo of waves crashing on Japans' coast is accompanied by a piercing echoed scream, from the mouth of a fear-frozen school girl, facing the wrath of the 'School of Hope' special 'Disciplinary Committee' - a band of half a dozen or so girls working for the corrupt Ishihara, Deputy Head. The man himself (Ishihara) is a sinister, exploitative, heartless piece of work. He intends to usurp the Head Mr.Nakatas' position right before Head of the Board Mr.Sato is due at the school to commemorate its' 25th Anniversary. So, employing his band of helpers, he has them stifle any rebelious tendencies or actions in order to secure his future position and begin to dominate the control of the school as Mr.Nakata (his boss) begins to head towards retirement.

The 'School of Hope' itself is a girls-only affair. All sexy, young, nubile, free-spirited and certainly all deliquents too. They're here partly thanks to the Juvenile Departments' work to bring wild street-spirits under the apparently respectable wing of Mr.Satos' establishment, in order to set them straight and become lovely office ladies or housewives. It all looks apparently relatively innocent at first, all schools for all eternity have faced the menace of bullying between pupils, and that's where we begin. Not many schools will have directly employed a select band to keep the majority of pupils all in order for them - the delinquents to beat all delinquents, essentially. Not many schools will manage to so effectively exploit their pupils at the same time as giving the wider world the impression they're perfectly respectable.

Into the mix comes three newly enrolled students, including Miki Sugimoto (aka 'Zero Woman' from Discoteks recent 'Red Handcuffs'). As gang members entering a school of other rebels, there's bound to be a clash, but the desire for revenge against the Disciplinary Committee (and consequently the school itself, because they're inextricably linked amongst other reasons) sparks an ever-increasing battle that involves sexual blackmail, torture, gentle pursuasion (involving copious amounts of nudity) and general lude or violent behaviour. As the Disciplinary Committee begin their work to bring the new faces under control, there's reluctance to comply and this escalates into the full-on conflict that drives the narrative to a large extent.

The Characters :

Ever males fantasy? Initially looks like something for teenage males, but this is exploitation cinema that intends to tap into a largely unseen and potentially massive audience that surely includes dirty old men (to coin a phrase) and repressed or rebelious teenage girls too. As the school staff are revealed to be a group who either directly pray on, exploit or fantasise about teenage girls, it's clear that this is film making that aims to be audacious as possible, to get creative with the scenarios and place all this extreme content within a solid and detailed story. So, bad behaviour fires at the screen from all quaters and everyone gets involved to a greater or lesser extent. Makes a change to see school girls as the main characters, and there's not many films with so many female characters that I can remember seeing.

Potentially there are far too many characters involved. Ishiharas' got the 'plain jane' secretary engaged, and intends to get his hands on her parents' wealth. He also has his gang, and the gang are quite large in their number, and then there's snivelling weakling Mr.Nakata, the school head, Mr.Sato the head of the School Board, the trio of new recruits and their increasing gang of fellow rebels, and all those characters floating around (including Reiko Ike, in a small role as an older visiting gang member). Confusing it was, certainly, but that's me again and not necessarily all the fault of the story. The film would bare watching repeatedly because of its interesting story (amongst other aspects), so I could clarify a lot of things that one viewing isn't necessarily capable of bringing into my mind right now, the morning after having watched it - IMDB also doesn't have a complete listing for the film, and I have yet to look around for more info on the film elsewhere.

It's a more substantial and clearly told story than Norifumi Suzukis' 'Sex & Fury', a very interesting mix of people and their relationships, they're all fleshed out pretty well, and it'san unusual fun-filled yet slightly uncomfortable or guilty pleasure to watch them all clash in a blaze of nudity and violence. Not without its' plot holes either, though they're fairly subtle to my eyes, as an unnamed 'Journalist' (read 'Yakuza') joins the girls to help battle the Schools' authority and abuse, but he's a man who never gains a name (played by Tsunehiko Watase) yet a man whos history becomes well known the staff who face his threats and skillfully-set 'sex traps'. The girls themselves, delinquents though they may be (and supposedly the toughest of the tough, remember) never entirely get it together to fight back until the very self-contained narrative kicks in, and this makes things looks a little contrived or unrealistic (not necessarily a bad thing in itself) so you're left wondering why they didn't realise sooner what risks they faced. There may be other errors, though this again may be my fault more than the narratives itself.

The Approach :

No doubting Suzuki is a superb Director, putting together a stylish film in a very solid and impressive way. Gone are the lurid, sugar-sweet colors of 'Sex & Fury', in come the more natural colors, largely dominated (it feels) by the blue school uniforms and the white walls of the building. No less dynamic to look at, and not without style, it's just a little more about the fantasy (almost porno-esque) scenarios, the fights and battles, then the rapidly escalating action and eventual conclusion - and he aims to get there with as many unusual and controversial ideas portayed as he possibly can.

Probably the most realisticly formed, yet most extreme or sexual film by Suzuki I've so far seen, and certainly the most worthy of praise in the broadest range of departments. Psychologically, the films a blend of light-hearted sexy and playful elements, brief melodrama and relatively sometimes straightforward, sometimes action movie with fight scenes, and also quite horrific scenes of torture. Blends together in a very successful fashion for the most part, though it's hard to sometimes separate or understand how to interpret sex which directly blends with violence, or why it should do so.

It's clearly not intended to be taken as a representation of reality, in probably any regard, but it is a real feeling film (in that it's not 'surreal' in a contrived manner) and relisticly portrays fantasy elements of all violent and sexual kinds. No less controversial though, as it's probably difficult to predict just how the audience will react once the film makes the market - but clearly, in this and related genres, Toei hopes to simply get as controversial as possible. The suggestion is of a freedom so great that it almost amounts to ignoring the vocal audiene because of the knowledge that those who have so far been paying to see such films simply keep relatively quiet about it.

Overall :

Picked this one out first because there's a different feel to a film that's about rebelious schoold girls, over the content of films similar to this that I've seen so far. No real dominant adult characters that overpower the school girls elements, no sexually inadequate teenage boys, but there's dirty old men (amongst others) and lovely young ladies instead. Certainly not without it's difficult moments, wether that's in understanding how films like this come into existence or if it's actually being able to (for the want of a better phrase) stomach the mix. Entertaining it certainly is. A very fun movie that's well worth seeing if you know it's your style. Not that these films have yet to melt into one amorphous blob, but I can see how viewers don't necessarily become desensitized to violence, but aware that it simply isn't real - and it becomes audacious in different terms, for its great leaps of imagination and daring.

The disc, a screener copy, is the same as the final production discs you'll get if you buy the set (again, one of the boxsets of the year, in my eyes at least) and so everythings fairly familiar. The menus are of the same design as both 'Sex & Fury' and 'Female Yakuza Tale', a little more clearly colored and seem to include animated (film clips) in the backgrounds. Extras as the same too, biogs, commentary, trailer, pictures of all kinds : reasonably bare and not all that necessary. A stunningly crisp and clear transfer once again, making for a more than perfectly well presented film. Mono sound is a little dull, understandably so, and in the end I am just glad I got to see the film itself presented as well as anyone could hope for. Nice.
