Book Title: The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (Cambridge Library Collection - Darwin, Evolution and Genetics) Book Author: Charles Darwin (Author), Francis Darwin (Editor) Series: Cambridge Library Collection - Darwin, Evolution and Genetics Paperback: 424 pages (This pdf version has 406 pages, including the covers) Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 2 edition (July 20, 2009) Language: English ISBN-10: 1108004830 ISBN-13: 978-1108004831 This second edition of The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was edited by his son Francis Darwin and published in 1890. As Sir Francis notes in his brief preface, because the first edition did not sell out in Charles Darwin's lifetime, 'he had no opportunity of publishing the material collected with a view to a second edition.' This material, in the form of 'a mass of letters, extracts from and references to books' was utilised in the second edition, as were Darwin's pencilled corrections in his own volume of the first. The book is a study of the muscular movements of the face (both human and animal) triggered by the emotions being felt - a 'physical' response to a 'mental' sensation. Darwin's detailed analysis of what actually happens to a body in a state of fear, or joy, or anger is illustrated by photographic images. Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Review "Even cows, when they frisk about from pleasure, throw up their tails in a ridiculous fashion." So writes Charles Darwin in his magnum opus on how humans and animals display such emotions as fear, anger, disdain, and pleasure; it is work that has in most respects been sustained by later scientific research. First published in 1872, Darwin's greatest work was never issued in quite the shape its author intended: bits and pieces were left out of subsequent printings, most of them released after Darwin's death, and later editors made additions to suit the intellectual fashion of their times. This definitive edition, heavily annotated, brings us the book that Darwin would have wanted, and it is essential to any naturalist's library. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
