The year is 1909 and adventures are galore, including encounters with lions. One day he rescues a Portugese explorer, Diego Alvarez. They become fast friends, and Diego takes Shankar on an exploration to find a treasure. Shankar and Diego meet many adventures, including a volcanic eruption and a terrifying creature only known as the Bunyip. On the way Shankar loses Diego, who falls victim to the Bunyip. Sankar is devastated, but goes on to find the lair of the Bunyip, which is also a diamond mine. But Shankar is too exausted to care.. Comments: Based on a story by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, Chander Pahar is a story that has been staple reading for Bengali youngsters for decades. This is a film that brings that adventure to life, albeit with some changes (like the killing of the Bunyip), that are not always believable. Nevetheless it is a very entertaining tale and Kamaleshwar Mukherjee deserves credit for creating a film that not only transports older people into the world of the young, but also brings Bibhutibhusan's story to life. Dev is good as the protagonist, Shankar, but the acting prize if any, would belong to Gerard Rudolf as Diego Alvarez. His diego is just what Bibhutibhushan would have imagined! Then there is the brilliant camerawork by Soumik Haldar and Subhankar Bhar. They brought to us Africa as we have never seen before in an Indian film. Another piece of brilliance would be the interaction between animals and humans. Shankar with elephants or Shankar besieged by lions was amazing. I didn't like the scenes of the volcano - it seemed rather amateurish compared to the other beautifully picturised scenes. The other flaw was the Bunyip. The oh so fearsome Bunyip looked more like a clay caricature of an armadillo! The opening sequence of music was superb. The rest was relatively less impressive. Overall, this was undoubtedly the best adventure movie for children filmed in Bengali! Uploader's Notes: This 1080p rip is from a Web HD given to me by a friend. I have made very few changes to the original (including keeping the 24fps frame rate. The only substantial change is to slightly reduce the slight yellow tint that permeated the film and some selective sharpening..
