His later life was filled with drugs, parties, and yet later, friendlessness, more drugs, and angst. He regarded this book as a sort of non-fiction novel. Capote interviewed almost everyone involved including locals, law enforcement, witnesses, and killers. \"In Cold Blood\" put Holcomb, Kansas on the map when even the gruesome 1959 murders it describes could not. Capote spent much time in Holcomb, Kansas interviewing neighbors. For about 2 months, even before the killers were apprehended, Harper Lee (author of To Kill a Mockingbird) accompanied Capote in Holcomb, helping him with notes for the book. He paid multiple visits to the killers, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, in prison. The story begins with the everyday life and history of the well-to-do and respected Clutter family, and descriptions of the pastoral farming community of Holcomb. Two parolees had false information that the Clutter\'s kept a good deal of money in their farm home. A need to eliminate witnesses, mixed with a wanton desire to kill, they brutally murdered Mr. and Mrs. Clutter and their two young daughters. As recorded in \"In Cold Blood,\" Perry Smith later stated, \"I didn\'t want to harm the man. I thought he was a very nice gentleman. Soft spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat.\" Scott Brick does an excellent job narrating with his dramatic inflections while never overacting. This transparent performance allows you to enjoy and appreciate the book fully without distractions from him. ========================= From the cover: On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues. As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. \"In Cold Blood\" is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.Truman Capote was born in New Orleans on September 30, 1924. He rose to international prominence in 1948 with the publication of \"Other Voices, Other Rooms.\" His other works include, \"Breakfast at Tiffany\'s,\" \"A Tree of Night\" and \"The Grass Harp.\" Capote twice won the O.
