Rather than falling back on the tired "group of crazed fanatics" concept, he has populated his book with intelligent, rational people who can articulate their perfectly logical reasons to wipe out mankind. The fact that we can, at some level, understand their motivations simply underscores the excellent writing. We can see the other side's viewpoint even as we're rooting for our heroes to stop them.
