Description
Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 Danish State Radio Symphony Orchestra / Fritz Busch (HMV, recorded 1947) Richard Strauss Don Juan, Op. 20 Symphonic Poem London Philharmonic Orchestra / Fritz Busch (Victor, recorded 1936 by HMV) Franz Schubert Symphony No. 5 in B flat (D. 485) Winterthur Symphony Orchestra / Fritz Busch (Musical Masterpiece Society, early 1950's; recorded 1949) (These are all new transfers.) _________________________________________________ It's not every day (like yesterday) that one gets a mint condition copy (four 78 rpm discs) of Fritz Busch's 1947 recording of Brahms' 2nd Symphony in the mail. Later, looking around in the net, I even found this recording being tagged as "famous." Well, it should be famous, since it's very fine indeed. To my mind, however, the recording which should be even more famous (maybe it still is - or maybe it was at one time) is Busch's 1936 recording of "Don Juan". Each time I transfer this recording, I'm completely astounded over how someone could manage to pack so much life - albeit the life of a "sinner" - into a piece of music lasting only a bit over 15 minutes (I'm talking here primarily of Busch's response to Strauss' score). Small miracles do happen sometimes. And one is only left to wonder: did I really hear what I heard? ___________________________________________________ LP and 78 rpm transfers of above material.
