BORIS LEONIDOVICH PASTERNAK (1890-1960) was a Russian poet, novelist, and translator. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958 "for his important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" -- an event which enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and forced him to decline the prize, though his descendants later accepted it in his name in 1988.

In his native Russia, Pasternak's first book of poems, MY SISTER, LIFE (1917), is one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Outside Russia, Pasternak is best known as the author of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (1958), a novel which takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and the Second World War. Due to its independent-minded stance and rejection of the doctrine of socialist realism, the novel was refused publication in the USSR, but was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957.

Included here are two translations of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, two volumes of poetry, several collections of prose and autobiography, and two volumes of correspondence.
