This series chronicles the adventures--in the air and on the ground--of the men of the 918th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Eighth Air Force. First commanded by irascible General Frank Savage--and later by Colonel Joe Gallagher, the son of a Pentagon General--the Group is stationed in England, and flies long-range bombing missions into German-held Europe.

I recognize the episode titles as actually belonging to "Black Sheep Squadron," but the description of some fighting group out of England is completely wrong! BBS was about VMF 214, headed by Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. It was a collection of misfit fighter pilots in WWII, brought together by Pappy to form a fighting squad in the Solomon Islands (known as "The Slot"). We also get to know the group of nurses stationed on the opposite side of the island, as well as the fighter pilots' support staff, who keep the planes in the air with spit and baling wire. (Most of what was in the show was made up, but the bones of the series were based on reality -- Pappy and VMF 214 actually existed, look 'em up!). Great show.
