Black Books is a second-hand bookshop in London run by an Irishman named Bernard Black. He is probably the planet's least-suited person to run such an establishment: he makes no effort to sell; closes at strange hours on a whim; is in a perpetual alcoholic stupor; abhors his customers, sometimes physically abusing them; and is often comatose at his desk. Help comes in the lumpy shape of Manny Bianco, a hairy, bumbling individual who, almost by osmosis, becomes Bernard's assistant. Manny is not exactly great at the job either but he is a million times better than Bernard. Next door is Fran, an anxious, frustrated woman who runs a sort of new-age shop selling the most unlikely bits of arty junk. Fran is friends with Bernard and, through him, with Manny; together the trio become embroiled in escapades that are sometimes extremely ludicrous, and always bizarre.

1. Cooking The Books

In this first episode we are introduced to Bernard, the alcoholic Irish book shop owner. But, Bernard has a problem. His taxes need doing, he's mathematically illiterate, and there's no avoiding it. His accountant turns out to be a wanted felon, and has gone on the run, and no one seems to be willing to help him. His salvation could be an exemption clause which gives him an out if he's injured. Fran is busy trying to discover what a particular item in her shop actually is whilst Manny, working as an accountant has an 'incident' with 'The Little Book of Calm'. Their coming together could be the start of a beautiful relationship.

Bernard teaches Manny the exact opposite of everything he needs to know, and leaves him with the shop. Tragically, he manages to sell most of the books in the shop - much to Bernard's disgust; seriously threatening his job at Black Books. Fran steps in once again to help.
