The Sound of Fury was the best rock & roll album to come out of England's original beat boom of the late '50s, and it was a singular achievement for its artist, Billy Fury, who wrote every song on the 10" LP. A singer of extraordinary power and sensitivity, the Liverpool-born Fury was the closest thing to Elvis Presley that England produced. The record was a miraculous piece of rock & roll, ten hard rocking songs that could've passed for Memphis originals. "My Advice," "Turn My Back on You," "Don't Say It's Over," "Since You've Been Gone," and "It's You I Need" could stand next to the best work that Elvis Presley cut between 1955 and 1957, running that gamut from hot rockabilly blow-outs to hard white blues. The 40th Anniversary reissue is on two CDs, the first of which contains the mono mix of the original 22-minute 10" LP, and the second of which has stereo masters of nine of the ten original tracks, along with the inexplicably failed single "My Christmas Prayer" and four B-sides. The sound throughout is impeccable, but so was the quality of the old Sound of Fury + 10 CD from 1988; what sets this apart are those bonus cuts and the booklet, which contains the best account ever given of the recording sessions that led to this extraordinary album.
