Description
William Billings was by all accounts a very intelligent, opinionated, and eccentric composer who lived in Boston in the US during the latter part of the 18th century. He attempted to make a living in music with poor success, in large part because of the primitive state of copyright laws at the time that gave him no benefit from pirated editions of his music. He was first and foremost a choral composer of striking variety: often folk-influenced, but also capable of Handelian breath, a dry wit, and highly personalized harmonic progressions. Though not a Romantic in any sense of the word, he looked forward to those composers by dying in abject poverty.
