Description

Lord Berners was more properly known as Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt-Wilson, the 14th Baron Berners. (He's on the left in the picture, above.) He was by all accounts madly whimsical, a man who had himself driven around his estates while wearing a pig's mask so he could frighten his tenants. He dyed the doves he allowed to roam free in brilliant colors, and put necklaces of fine pearls around the necks of his dogs. Berners wrote several novels, one of which I read--a mystery centering around why and how a camel ended up inside an austerely wealthy British mansion.

He also wrote quite a bit of accomplished music, much of it quixotically humorous such as The Triumph of Neptune. Set at the end of the 19th century, it features the adventures of the sailor Tom Tug, who, after several notable events, ends up dead. This, however, doesn't prevent him from returning home as a spirit, drunk, singing an off-key rendition of that parlor favorite, "The Last Rose of Summer." He tries to get together with his wife, who ends up leaving him, but that only leads to Neptune making him a prince and marrying Tom off to one of his daughters.

The Suite of this ballet is roughly half its length, and has been recorded repeatedly since the 1950s. The best version though remains that first one, with Thomas Beecham conducting, and it's offered here in very good sound.
