Berlioz - Roman Carnival Overture - T Beecham, London Philc (1936) [Philidor; FLAC]

Thomas Beecham was known as much for being a witty raconteur as a conductor, and to an extent, the former detracted from the latter. But he was a gifted conductor, self-taught and exciting, always in touch with his orchestras. In an age where impersonal conducting has become the standard, looking back to Beecham reveals how much more of a score comes through if the conductor concentrates a great deal of time on phrasing, instead of just beating time.

This is definitely not state of the art sound, but it is pretty good for 1936, with the typical Beecham combination of energy and discipline to the fore.
