Plot summary


Peter is a very peculiar tour guide: his speciality is to take on a journey his customers stuffed animals, taking care of them in every aspect, even taking careful pictures of the most beautiful moments of the holiday. But one day he is involved in a car accident and the three teddy bears he was looking after disappear mysteriously. Peter has then to contact his customers trying to fill the void created by this disappearance. Moreover he also has to solve an urgent financial problem: he doesnt have any insurance and he has to cover the hospital costs.

With surreal candy-like and fairy tones, Cheng Fen-fen stages an unusual emotional on the road movie, in which a tour guide, who paradoxically isnt used to handling with people, for the first time has to face real travellers. Through undemanding dialogues and a naïve look,full of childish sense of wonder(also typical of those adults who have never completely grown up, as all the main characters of the film, in their own ways, actually are)

Bear It is a story of growth and common life, which starts from unusual premises, unexpectedly connecting people of different ages and legacies: an ill young girl, an old couple, a bewildered and depressed artist and tour guide Peter as inconvenient binding force, since his accident is the cause why they all meet.

Through trim saturated colours, a quite rudimental yet effective soundtrack and varied tones, which simply slide from mockery to tragedy, mainly thanks to Peters sullen expressions and clumsy gestures (played by Kuo Pin-chao), Cheng Fen-fen draws a suspended universe, which seems to have come out from an
intimist manga. The teddy bears, unanimated objects on which their owners lavish their love, are a metaphor of some blanks in their lives (lack of health, trust, relationships), thus having a less trivial totemic function than what could seem in the beginning. Beart It is not just this: it emerges from the construction of its characters and their relationships, thus being able to touch the audience even before the ending.
