Description

Google and the World Brain

Technology Documentary hosted by Ben Lewis, published by BBC broadcasted as part of BBC Storyville series in 2013 - English narration

Information
------------------------------

Documentary which tells the story of the most ambitious project ever conceived on the internet and the people who tried to stop it. In 1937 HG Wells predicted the creation of the 'world brain', a giant global library that contained all human knowledge which would lead to a new form of higher intelligence. 70 years later the realisation of that dream was under way, as Google scanned millions of books for its Google Books website. However, over half those books were still in copyright and authors across the world launched a campaign to stop them, climaxing in a New York courtroom in 2011. A film about the dreams, dilemmas and dangers of the internet, set in spectacular locations in China, USA, Europe and Latin America.

A Polar Star Films & B.L.T.V Ltd production.

With little presence from Google it never amounts to a well-rounded and complete film. Attempts to jazz up the terribly boring transcript readings devolve into distractingly amateur animation. Director Ben Lewis attempts to establish Google as a Big Brother of villainy, with the starving author struggling to reach out from his heavy foot; but only succeeds in allowing Google to look like the levelheaded innovator being forced to deal with nagging behind-the-times intellectuals.

btw...
Thank you for the upload.
Cheers
Great Doc
There are three types of people in this world. Those that talk about PEOPLE, those the talk about EVENTS, and those that talk about ISSUES. Refreshing to see my torrent friends knowing that issues are what's important. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
skimmed through on vlc and all looks good.will let you know if there are any probs once ive watched fully.many thanks to the uploader
Thanks.
you make a good point. Here's a nugget:
Do not almost all people take as much as they're allowed to? Governments are people and in democracies they are supposed to represent "the people". What my concern is when a more totalitarian government grabs power who do not submit to the the limits set by the people, but have no limits. Many people use social media and post the most detailed private information there. It doesn't matter what they shield of from the public arena with privacy settings when a totalitarian regime gets hold of government and have access to everything.
A person taking from a person is a bit short sighted. They each have a perception of what's being given and taken. If someone takes exactly as much as I give them, that's my choice. If they ask for more, I can say "no".They don't have the right to take more than that under the aegis of some directive outside of some wrong I've committed and then they have to take me to court.Government has that right and can invoke it under any of a number of Acts. I remember the first time I heard "patriot act";it wasn't explained well at the time but the climate (immediately post 9/11)was such that everyone was scared and "patriotism" would get us through.I was scared; nobody knew what was going on. I went so far as to call my wife and told her to clean out the bank accounts for the cash.It didn't occur to me until about a week after TPA was passed (with record approval)how Orwellian it sounded. It was supposed to be temporary. It's not.It wasn't as broad as it is now. They can listen to phone calls, read email, bug your home, and let's not forget about possible drones. If a person takes something from you, you can get it back. When you GIVE a standing Gov't power, wresting it back from them is a near impossibility. They don't GIVE rights or power back to the governed.Another small point: Totalitarianism is not a matter of degrees. You're right about social media, it's a feast of info to the point that it can become a predictor of intent.I haven't even mentioned corporate involvement. Here's a book:
I don't mean stealing but when the laws allows to take, then many people (though there will always be exceptions) will take what is allowed. See the extravagant "wages" and bonuses in modern day business.
I can agree with you on many points.A totalitarian gov't doesn't just "happen".Its a lot like water, in that it moves along the path of LEAST resistance.Every gain it makes is a loss to the whole.Any standing gov't has ONE TASK, only one: To protect the rights and freedoms of its constituents. You have probably heard the quote:"The price of freedom is vigilance".I still,12 years later, shudder when I think how easily TPA passed and how it seemed like a warm blanket. It was reactionary legislation that the electorate called for in the wake of 9/11.The gov't answered the call;then twisted it.We fell asleep. It's been around long enough now as to be inured in our mindset. My son was 8 yrs old when it passed. He doesn't know a world w/o it.I've taken pains to make sure he "listens" what policy makers say, but also "hears" what they're not. He's a better person than me.That is something I take any pride I have, in.If he sees an issue important to him he takes a stand.Example: He helped stop his school district from enacting school uniforms.Only b/c the clothing doesn't change a kid's "want" to learn. If the want isn't there they won't learn in a shirt and tie any better than they will in baggy jeans.I digress; I defined what a gov'ts job is.Our problem is that our legislators have sought to protect themselves and their machinery. Then couch those designs as necessary to protect the people.
Freedom also comes with responsibility, that's what many people in all ranks of society forget. Power hungry people will use fear to restrict freedoms for others so they gain more freedom for themselves. I think it isn't that people fell asleep, quite contrary, but the fear-hormones took over from rational thinking. That alongside with rhetorical references to "patriotism" and such and this way it was not that hard to frame the people to lure them into the Iraq war and accept TPA. It's quite ironic that by making people believe they will loose their freedoms they accept policies that harm their freedoms.
Wow, been a minute.
If you think America is A democracy you are wrong. The government is mostly here to support business agenda's anymore. The American government uses google to "spy" on Americans, but not to catch bad guys. They are looking for marketing info for advertisement and news media. They are using our info to keep us ignorant of what is really going on. It's not hard to figure it out if you follow the money.
