One was written as an experiment in micropolyphony - clusters of adjacent sounds - the other inspired by Nietzsche's philosophy of the Superman; but both Ligeti's Atmospheres and Richard Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra were to find popular coinage through the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: a Space Odyssey. Interstellar movie memories will be revived tonight when they are played by the fine young musicians of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under British conductor Jonathan Nott. The programme also includes Mahler's poignant song cycle Kindertotenlieder and Schoenberg's ground-breaking Five Orchestral Pieces, premiered at the Proms nearly a century ago by Henry Wood.

Rising star conductor Jonathan Nott and one of the world's top youth orchestras, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, in Ligeti's haunting Atmospheres - a work made famous by Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is followed by Mahler's poignant Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children), featuring baritone Matthias Goerne, and Schoenberg's ground-breaking Five Orchestral Pieces, premiered at the Proms in 1912 by Henry Wood.
