BBC Life (2009) Episode 3, 4, 5 and 6

Life is a nature documentary series made by BBC television, first broadcast as part of the BBC's Darwin Season on BBC One and BBC HD from October to December 2009.
The series takes a global view of the specialised strategies and extreme behaviour that living things have developed in order to survive;
what Charles Darwin termed "the struggle for existence". Four years in the making, the series was shot entirely in high definition.

3. Mammals

Intelligence, warm blood and strong family bonds have made mammals the most successful group of animals on the planet:
they can even survive the Antarctic winter. Here, a Weddell seal leads her pup on its first swim beneath the ice. In East Africa,
a rufous sengi uses a mental map of the pathways it has cleared to outwit a chasing lizard.

4. Fish

Countless fish fill the seas and almost all other waters on the blue planet, some even visit or invade bordering land.
Evolution created a huge variety in size, shape, defense means etc., fit for varies ways of life in all kinds of waters, allowing camouflage, shelter etc.
They occupy various positions in aquatic and related food chains, eaten by and/or eating other fish and vertebrates, crustaceans etc.
Other relationships are parasitic or symbiotic. Some know role-reversal, with males caring for eggs and/or hatchlings. Many species live in huge schools, often for safety.

5. Birds

Birds descend from dinosaurs who developed feathers. Those allow most of them to fly, which few other vertebrates can. Some birds gave up flying, like penguins,
who specialize in diving and prove feather's fabulous insulating efficiency.
Feathers are also key to courting, almost as varied as bird physiognomy and ways of solitary or social life almost all over the globe.

6. Insecsts

Insects species outnumber all higher animals by far. Their immense variety reflect adaptation to an extreme range of ecological conditions, even gravely toxic ones.
Especially the nearly 60,000 fly species cover about all the globe.
Many can fly, which helps getting everywhere, but they also occur on/in soil, water, host plants or animals,
cavities etcetera. They often occur in great swarms, as over a billion Monarch butterflies migrating from Canada to a Mexican forest to hibernate.
To occupy various positions in ecological systems, usually prey, often predator, sometimes pollinator, and so on.

Deze aflevering laat het zien: tot in de meest extreme leefgebieden hebben de makers dierengedrag vastgelegd zoals dat nog nooit te zien is geweest.
4. Fish

In de wereldzeeën zijn de vissen de baas. Ze zijn er in alle soorten en maten, van de majestueuze maar gevaarlijke pijlstaartrog tot het vriendelijke zeepaardje.
We maken een fantastische reis over open zee, bezoeken koraalriffen en duiken naar onpeilbare diepten.
5. Birds

Vogels zijn de kleurrijke, dynamische meesters van het luchtruim. Met spectaculaire, speciaal voor Life ontwikkelde cameratechnieken betreden we hun wereld.
We doen fascinerende ontdekkingen over hun gedrag en krijgen een compleet nieuwe kijk op deze prachtige schepsels.
6. Insects

Insecten vormen de meest diverse én succesvolle categorie dieren op aarde. Hun grote geheim is een pantser dat alle zachte delen beschermt.
In deze aflevering zien we onder meer sterk uitvergrote beelden van insecten die er plotseling uitzien als angstaanjagende monsters.
Daarnaast ontdekken we ook verrassend sociaal gedrag.
