Mark Miodownik reveals the amazing stories behind everyday objects of desire and how they are miraculously transformed from raw materials into the very stuff of the modern world.

Part one of two. Professor Mark Miodownik provides an insight into the genius design techniques that contributed to the invention and production of everyday objects often taken for granted. He begins by focusing on items found in the home, including razor blades, tights, plywood and foam rubber.

2) Away
Professor Mark Miodownik's investigation into the complexities of modern invention concludes with an insight into how new materials enabled people to become curious about the world around them. He reveals the impact the advent of the bicycle had on the national gene pool, and highlights how the concept of levitation provided the spiritually inclined to set out in search of their inner self.
