The Siegfried Line

De Siegfried Linie (of Westwall) wordt tussen 1936 en 1945 in opdracht van Adolf Hitler gebouwd, als reactie op de Franse Maginotlinie, een gigantisch fortenstelsel langs de Duitse grens.
De werking van de maar liefst 630(!) kilometer lange Siegfried Linie is psychologisch en strategisch bedoeld
Het strategische voordeel blijkt al in 1939. Slechts 100.000 à 200.000 Duitse soldaten in de Siegfried linie staan tegenover 100 Franse divisies (800.000 man!).
In mei 1940 verlaten de Duitsers hun linie om dwars door de Ardennen Frankrijk binnen te vallen.
In 1944 biedt de verouderde linie een veilige stop voor de terugtrekkende Duitsers.
Door het ontzag van geallieerde kant voor de Siegfried linie krijgt Hitler Duitsland de kans zich te reorganiseren. Een felle en verbeten strijd van 6 maanden volgt.
Er zijn mensen die beweren dat er hier meer Amerikanen sneuvelden dan in de gehele Vietnam oorlog..
