Storyline:
4 interlocking stories all connected by a single gun all converge at the end and reveal a complex and tragic story of the lives of humanity around the world and how we truly aren't all that different. In Morocco, a troubled married couple are on vacation trying to work out their differences. Meanwhile, a Moroccan herder buys a rifle for his sons so they can keep the jackals away from his herd. A girl in Japan dealing with rejection, the death of her mother, the emotional distance of her father, her own self-consciousness, and a disability among many other issues, deals with modern life in the enormous metropolis of Tokyo, Japan. Then, on the opposite side of the world the married couple's Mexican nanny takes the couple's 2 children with her to her son's wedding in Mexico, only to come into trouble on the return trip. O filmie:
"Babel" to cztery zachodzące na siebie fabularne wątki.

Wątek pierwszy: pewien pasterz w Maroku kupuje od sąsiada strzelbę, którą ten dostał w prezencie od japońskiego turysty. Broń trafia w ręce synów mężczyzny. Ci oddają przypadkowy strzał w kierunku przejeżdżającego obok autobusu wycieczkowego.

Wątek drugi: kula trafia Susan (Cate Blanchett), amerykańską turystkę. Bus dowozi ranną kobietę do najbliższej wioski. Jej mąż Richard (Brad Pitt), dzwoni do ambasady. Może się tylko modlić, aby jego żona przeżyła.

Wątek trzeci: gosposia Amelia (Adriana Barraza), zatrudniona w domu Richarda i Susan, planuje pod ich nieobecność wyjechać do Meksyku na ślub syna. Nie ma z kim zostawić dzieci swoich państwa, więc zabiera je ze sobą. Za kierownicą samochodu siada jej porywczy bratanek, Santiago (Gael García Bernal). Wyprawa przybiera dramatyczny obrót.

Wątek czwarty: w Tokio głuchoniema dziewczyna Chieko (Rinko Kikuchi) popada w coraz większy konflikt z samotnie wychowującym ją ojcem. Mężczyzna wrócił właśnie z Maroka, gdzie podarował strzelbę miejscowemu pasterzowi.
