Historisch tv-docudrama over de grootste natuurramp uit de antieke wereld, en de
mogelijke oorsprong van de mythe van Atlantis. 1620 voor Christus; een
vulkaanuitbarsting op het eiland Thera, het huidige Santorini, doet gigantische
zeebevingen ontstaan. Metershoge tsunami’s overspoelen Kreta. Deze ramp had een
ongeziene impact op de eerste grote Europese beschaving; het betekende het einde van
de Minoïsche beschaving.

This is a docudrama about the volcanic eruption on the island of Thera, circa 1600BC,
that supposedly devastated Minoan civilisation and gave birth to the legends of
Atlantis as related by Plato some 1200 years later. You get a pretty neat combination
of special effects, plausible characters and storyline, and lessons in history,
archaeology and vulcanology. You also get the oddly eclectic mix of faces that often
characterises these docudramas (North African? Indian? Anglo-Saxon?)plus some clunky
dialogue that exposes the limitations of the cast. Tom Conti's gravelly voiceover also
seems rather laid-back for an end-of-the world scenario. Nevertheless, a generally
absorbing and informative recreation even if it does leave you wondering why Plato
located his island in the Atlantic rather than the Aegean.
