Atlantic Convoys: The War at Sea Channel 4 - 30 August2009 1/4 At the height of the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War, it was more dangerous to be a merchant seaman than to serve with any branch of the British forces. This four-part documentary series is, in part, a tribute to the men who crewed the supply ships bringing food, fuel, munitions and machinery from the USA through the perilous North Atlantic shipping lanes. As well as hearing from seamen who survived German U-boat attacks on the convoys, it asks how those attacks were planned and perpetrated. There's enough detail about particular strategies, such as German naval commander Karl Donitz's deadly "wolf pack" lines of submarines, to satisfy those who are fascinated by the turning points in the battle. Sadly, every bit of clever thinking or new technology came with heavy losses. Next week, the story moves on to how the Enigma code-breakers in Bletchley Park contributed to the safety of the Atlantic convoys.
