DescriptionRichard Arnell had his greatest successes as a composer in the 1950s, when he drew the attention and praise of the well-known conductor, Thomas Beecham. After that point he began experimenting with mechanical and electronic sound, and drew far enough from both the traditional mainstream and the aleatory young turks to alienate nearly all backers. His Symphony No. 4 follows his sojourn in the US in the 1940s. The early, severe influence of Hindemith became seasoned by a Prokofiev-like orchestral brilliance, and syncopated, widely spaced chords that recall Moross and Copland. The third movement in particular has great energy and character. A bio of Arnell is included.
