Arnell - Punch & the Child - M Yates, BBC Concert Orch (2009) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 87.76 MB)
DescriptionRichard Arnell had his greatest successes as a composer in the 1950s, when he drew the attention and praise of the well-known conductor, Thomas Beecham. After that point he began experimenting with mechanical and electronic sound, and drew far enough from both the traditional mainstream and the aleatory young turks to alienate nearly all backers. His ballet, Punch and the Child, dates from his most popular period. The scenario depicts a child discovering and following the puppet character Punch around, in a puppet world brought to life, where the hero, as usual, amoral, mischievous, eloquent, and manic. Eventually Punch tires of her, playing a game that conceals a trick, and leaves the child alone in the park where she first found him, only to be picked up again by her parents. The broad-spanned melodies, bright orchestration, and energetic rhythms are all characteristic of Arnell at his best. A bio of Arnell is included.
