DescriptionThose who sleep badly seem to a greater or lesser degree guilty: what do they do? They make the night present. --Maurice Blanchot In Tabucci's dream-like novel of 1984 a man is searching for a missing friend. He trawls the malodorous back streets, brothels and seedy hotels of Bombay, Madras and the hippie hangouts of Goa. ‘You Europeans are very delicate’ remarks a doctor, who lifts his toupee up and down like a hat, ”a lot of people lose their way in India”. Fragmented, enigmatic and hypnotising the story offers vibrant images - floors teeming with black cockroaches, prostitute shacks the size of sentry boxes, crows in grand hotel gardens pecking at orange peel in Martini glasses and being chased off by cricket bat wielding servants. Will the narrator find his friend,or is he really on a quest to find himself? The book won the French Prix Médicis étranger in 1987. Contrast clause: Alain Corneau directed a 1989 French film adaptation with the title Nocturne indien which is currently available here. :) Sharing Widget |
