Anil's Ghost KINDLE MOBI by Michael Ondaatje H.A. (Size: 411.78 KB)
DescriptionAnil's Ghost by Michael Ondaatje is a fictionalized account of the Sri Lankan civil war, of some of the most violent episodes in recent history; yet it is also a profound meditation on the nature of truth and our varying perceptions of it. In many ways it also a novel of crime, as forensic anthropologist Anil Tissera (revisiting the country after a fifteen-year absence as part of a U.N. commission investigating human rights abuses) and the archaeologist Sarath Diyasena uncover evidence implicating the government in mass murder and war crimes. As is usual with Ondaatje, however, the novel is NOT plot driven, as the narrative presents a fluidity of time, of viewpoints, of memories and feeling. Expatriate Sri Lankan Canadian author Ondaatje writes with understanding and sensitivity of the culture, history and life of Sri Lanka; and while his research into the history and milieu of his subject is intense (he reportedly spent seven years researching for Anil's Ghost) his novel posits no political stance or remedy; instead it exposes the tragedy of each life, before and after, that the horror of war perpetrates upon those who live through it and those who must live with its consequences.
