DescriptionWhatever you were doing in 1985 and whoever you were doing it with (or to), these are the songs you were doing it to, presented by the host who played the hits from coast to coast , Casey Kasem! Music News from 1985 The 'Brat Pack': More than any other year since 1978, movie hits were the dominant force on the Top 40. Like Saturday Night Fever and Grease in 1978, a series of related movies led the way. The Breakfast Club was the first, sending Simple Minds' (Don't You) Forget About Me to the top of the charts. The cast members, who later became known as the 'Brat Pack' (so called because they played a group of high school students who were serving detention on a Saturday morning) included Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwold, and Ally Sheedy. These same cast members also appeared in the hit movie St. Elmo's Fire later in the same year. This movie produced a hit single with its title song by John Parr. Other hit movies that spawned hit songs during '85 include Back to the Future (The Power of Love and Back in Time by Huey Lewis and the News), A View to a Kill (title song by Duran Duran), Spies Like Us (title song by Paul McCartney), and Rocky IV (Burning Heart by Survivor). The Phonograph Meets the Laser Beam: Laser technology entered the music world in 1985, as the Compact Disc (CD) was first introduced to the market. The CD works on the same principle as the vinyl record, only a laser beam reads a digital engraving, rather than a stylus reading grooves in vinyl. The CD offered fans unsurpassed sound quality and led to a revolution in sound technology for the recording industry. U.S.A. for Africa: During a year marked by benefit concerts, a collection of Pop music stars, among them Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie, got together and produced a hit single titled We Are The World which reached number one in only one month! All of the procedes from the single went to fight hunger in Africa.
