Music News from 1983

Superstar meets Super Hit: What does one get when one combines a Pop superstar with the number one selling album of all time? The new number one selling album of all time! Megastar Michael Jackson patterned the songs on his 1983 album Thriller after the enormously successful Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack album of 1977-78. The result was an even bigger selling album and the number one album ever in the Rock era! Thriller produced two number one smash singles, Billie Jean (7 weeks) and Beat It and two other Top 40 hits - the title song Thriller and Human Nature. The big story surrounding Thriller was the music video produced for the title song. Because it ran 14 minutes, producers had to film it instead of videotape it. The Thriller video was a production masterpiece, and considered by many to be the greatest video of all time!

Reaching the "Dark Side of the Moon": Speaking of big selling albums, Pink Floyd's 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon set a Rock era record for longevity by spending an unprecedented 9 years (almost 500 weeks!) on the Billboard magazine album chart before finally falling off in 1983. The Rock classic entered the Top 200 album chart when it was released in'73, then fell off after a short time. It re-entered in 1974, and didn't leave until '83. It even outlasted Pink Floyd's other monsterously successful album The Wall, which charted in 1979 and 1980. No other album has come close to that length of time on the album chart, ever!

More British Invasion: Duran Duran, ABC, After the Fire, and A Flock of Seagulls were just a few of the British bands that reached American charts in 1983. It was the next wave of "British Invasion II" brought about by the Techno-pop sound recently popular in Europe. This wave also brought in two popular Australian bands, Men at Work (1982) and INXS. This continued the evolution of the New Wave sound started by both American and British bands starting in the late 1970's. 1983 saw the biggest infusion of British talent on American charts since 1964!
