American Top 40 1972 February 5th

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio. The Casey-hosted Extras are not from the original broadcast.

This countdown really starts rockin’ at number 24 with "Levon" by Elton John who opens for Led Zeppelin and "Black Dog" at number 23.

A listener wants to know what artist held the number one spot for the most consecutive weeks. Casey says it's a tie at 16 weeks in a row, and each artist needed two different songs to do it. In 1945 it was Les Brown & His Band Of Renowned and in 1956 it was Elvis.

After Casey plays "Floy Joy" (at number 33) by the Supremes, he tells who wrote it so those in 1972 wouldn't be so sore (I'll forgive the composer if you will).

Sly & The Family Stone sings "Family Affair" (at number 30). There was a popular TV show by the same name that had just ended its 5-year run. It starred Johnny Whitaker who would later appear in Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.

What is "Perfect Harminola" you may ask? You won't hear it at number 26 when The Hillside Singers sing "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)" but you will at the end of number 18 when The New Seekers sing the same song (you can't get away from that song even here in the 21st century!).

One singer in the countdown played two weeks for the Los Angles Angels. Casey tells who.

A listener asks which song stayed at #2 the longest. In 1950, Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa" slipped after 5 weeks at #1 to spend 11 weeks at #2 (thank you Ben Marichal).

Casey gets this question; "What artist occupied the #1 position consecutive or otherwise, more than anyone else in a single year?" Glen Miller was runner-up with 24 weeks in 1942, but the record-holder kept the #1 spot for 25 weeks in 1956 and then again for 25 more in 1957. It was the King of the Charts , Elvis Presley.
