Description

"The way Billboard figures the rankings each week is this; they get retail sales information from a hundred record stores across the country, run it through a data processing computer system, and come up with their Hot 100 list of the week's most popular singles. Then from Billboard's list of a hundred, we take the Top 40 and we count 'em down for you every week at this time on American Top 40."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.

In this countdown:

Casey calls one song, "the preschool hit-of-the-year." Rubber Duckie" by Ernie (Ciccone) is (at number 29).

Michael Nesmith (& The First National Band) are at number 21 with, "Joann." This former member of the Monkees also did some solo work. As a RocketMan Extra, I have included the video of the last single Mr. Nesmith ever released, from 1979 (YouTube uploader johnrigs54321, and you may forget Lucy and Ramona, but you will never forget Sunset Sam).

The highest debuting single of the week, "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters (entering at number 18 nonetheless), was originally the theme for a concurrently running TV commercial for Crocker Bank of California. That Commercial is an extra as well (YouTube uploader oswaldwang).

At one point, Casey points out the large number of "girl songs" in the countdown:

"Candida" by Dawn (at number 3),
"Julie Julie Julie Do You Love Me" by Bobby Sherman (at number 5),
"Cracklin' Rosie" by Neil Diamond (at number 4),
and "Lola" by The Kinks (but Casey must not have listened to the lyrics too closely because Lola is a dude, dude!)

Motown has seven songs in this countdown, and Casey says one sounds the least "Motown," "Indiana Wants Me" by R. Dean Taylor (he should feel lucky MOTOWN wanted him).
