Under the modest title Douze etudes dans les tons mineurs Valentin Alkan created one of the greatest works in the pianist's repertoire. In Stephanie McCallum this great music has found a worthy exponent not afraid to face and overcome the hurdles that Alkan laid out for any who take up the challenge. Out of the thickets of notes there emerges a rich imagination and marvellous musical mind, utterly individual and unforgettable.
