Sorry, I have to ask, what is wrong with it being a .mkv? I happen to use VLC for all my movie playbacks because it is so very good and can jump forward/backward in the movie to skip parts you don't want to see or go back for something you missed. .mkv is one of VLC's native formats and works great.
Again, sorry but I have to ask As I have seen your comment many times.
