This series tells the story of the most significant battles of the 20th century. These battles helped shape the world we live in today and their outcomes are at the heart of current global affairs.



Throughout the series, father and son team Peter and Dan Snow take you through these conflicts, from the bleak chill of Stalingrad, where the Hitler's army buckled under the superior tactics of the Russian army, to the steamy jungles of Vietnam where the most powerful nation on the planet was brought to its knees.

In Depth Analysis

This series has truly set a precedent for recreating the intricacies of large-scale conflict. Obviously a battle is so much more than two sides just attacking each other; the strategies, the weapons, the tactics and their impact are all scrutinised, as are the potential outcomes had these campaigns gone the other way.



Some of the battles in the series concluded as a result of superior military insight and ingenuity outfoxing the opposition. In other instances human error, pride and arrogance can be seen causing defeat. It can also be said that luck is never far away from any military conflict.



The first rule of warfare is that no strategy or campaign can withstand the first actual encounter with the enemy. As this series will show, victory or defeat often come about by the crucial decisions made when the battle is underway; It is often the ability to adapt that separates the winners from the losers.





Episode 1: 1918 Western Front

Peter and Dan travel to the Western Front in France to investigate the battle that gave Britain and its allies decisive victory in World War One - Amiens.



Episode 2: 1942 Midway

Peter and Dan explore a pivotal engagement in the war in the Pacific, when the fates of the US and Japanese navies were decided in just a few brief minutes.



Episode 3: 1942 Stalingrad

Peter and Dan go to Russia to retell one of the most epic battles of World War Two, when the German and Soviet armies fought bitterly for every inch of Stalin's city.



Episode 4: 1951 Korea

Peter and Dan examine the two most important engagements of the Korean War - a fascinating but largely forgotten conflict from the earliest days of the Cold War.



Episode 5: 1968 Vietnam

Peter and Dan explore the Tet Offensive, a turning point in the Vietnam War that precipitated a huge change in American public opinion.



Episode 6: 1973 Middle East

Of the many conflicts between Israel and the Arab nations of the Middle East, the war in October 1973 was one of the most crucial, as Peter and Dan discover.



Episode 7: 1982 Falklands

Peter and Dan travel to the Falklands to explore the last battle on British soil, twenty-five years after the war to recapture the islands from Argentina.



Episode 8: 1991 Gulf

Peter and Dan examine the United Nations-backed war to remove the forces of Saddam Hussein's Iraq from Kuwait.
