STAGE 6 DETAILS: Type: Plain Date: Thursday 9 July Weather Forecast: Rain Showers Start And Finish: GĂ©rone > Barcelone Distance: 181.5 km (112.78 Miles) Stage Profile: The southerly march continues as the race crosses the border into Spain for a finish in the 1992 Olympic City of Barcelona. However after the 181 kms ride from Gerona it is not likely to smile on all of the sprinters as the finish line is outside the Olympic stadium on the summit of the Montjuich climb. A lot of the American riders, including George Hincapie, will feel at home as the start town of Gerona is their European home base. Most of the day the riders will be passing through the holiday resorts of the Costa Brava but they won't have the chance enjoy the cooling Mediterranean. After the rolling coast road in the beginning the race moves in land to spice up the approach to Barcelona. I expect that as there has been on of most days this week there will be an early breakaway. On this section I expect that they are likely to get pulled back. There is a nasty climb with about twenty kilometres to go which might prove unpopular for one or two of the sprinters. As the finish is at the top of a two kilometre climb it should suit a hard man like Oscar Freire who will be motivated to try and win on Spanish soil. Related Torrents
